Broncho-esophageal Fistula Found during Induction of General Anesthesia

Abstract
Broncho-esophageal fistula is an uncommon clinical entity which can cause severe debilitation and suppurative lung disease. Acquird fistulas between the esophagus and the tracheobroncial tree are uncommon in adults, despite of the anatomic
proximity of
these structures, but have a favorable outcome with treatment.
They may be either acquired or congenital, and the former lesions may be due to either trauma or infection. The most common infection's cause of acqired brochoesophageal fistula is granulomatous disease, most commonly tuberculosis.
In a 40 year-old female with tuberculosis empyema, bronco-esophagal fistula was found during induction of he general anesthesia. After broncho-esophageal fistula was confirmed, correction of broncho-esophageal fistula and left lower lobe
lobectomy
were
performed under continuous thoracic epidural block supplemented with light general anesthesia
